10 Cloverfield Lane tells a mysterious and claustrophobic thriller story. It starts with a young woman named Michelle, who wakes up in an underground bunker after a car accident. When she opens her eyes, she finds herself trapped in a strange place, and a man named Howard tells her that he saved her, but that the world outside is no longer safe to live in. According to him, there’s been some kind of attack, and going outside means certain death.
At first, Michelle thinks Howard is just crazy. But as time passes in the bunker, things start to feel genuinely suspicious. There’s also another man named Emmett in the shelter, and he also believes the outside world is dangerous. The three of them try to coexist for a while, but Howard’s odd behavior makes Michelle more and more uneasy.
As a viewer, you keep asking yourself, “What’s really going on outside?” Is Howard a paranoid savior or a delusional captor? Should Michelle fear the man in front of her or the unknown threat waiting outside?
Toward the end, the tension ramps up and Michelle decides to escape the bunker. And once she gets out, we finally see what’s really out there. What started as a psychological thriller suddenly shifts into full-on science fiction and takes the audience by surprise.
